The large volumes of hazardous waste at Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs) need to be carefully planned and monitored to avoid spills, accidents and mechanical disasters and to protect coil, groundwater, surface water, and air. Transporters move regulated waste on public roads, highways, railes, and waterways.
Transfer facilities such as loading docks, parking areas, and storage areas may hold waste temporarily during the normal course of transportation. A hazardous waste transporter may hold waste without a storage permit in containers at a transfer facility for 10 days or less as long as the waste is manifested and kept in U.S. DOT specification containers.
The LDR Program (Land Disposal Restrictions) ensures that prior to disposal, waste is properly treated. This makes hazardous waste less harmful to groundwater by reducing the potential for leaching of hazardous constituents and by reducing waste toxicity by destroying or removing harmful constituents.
